Challenge

A former gas station UST release site in southwest Illinois required treatment of BTEX compounds, MTBE, and naphthalene contamination in soil to meet IEPA Tier 1 Commercial Standards. The multi-contaminant nature of the plume required a treatment approach effective across different compound classes.

Site Conditions

  • Large Plume

Approach

Ex-situ chemical oxidation using Fenton’s Reagent was applied through a systematic batch treatment process: excavated soil was progressively returned to the excavation while treatment chemistry was applied and mixed continuously by excavator until target chemical volumes and consistency were achieved throughout the plume.

Results

The ex-situ batch treatment using Fenton’s Reagent achieved greater than 97% reduction in all three target contaminants—BTEX compounds, MTBE, and naphthalene—across the full treated soil volume. Treatment results met IEPA Tier 1 Commercial Standards, the applicable regulatory cleanup threshold for the former gas station UST release site in southwest Illinois. Laboratory confirmation of results was completed within two weeks of treatment, providing rapid verification of performance across the multi-contaminant plume and a clear path toward regulatory site closure.
