Our History
A Legacy of Innovation
For over 30 years, two trusted organizations built independent legacies, pioneering their own fields of remediation and earning the confidence of asset owners and environmental consultants.
McMillan-McGee (Mc²) is Founded
- Founded in Calgary, Alberta, Canada by Dr. Bruce C.W. McGee, Ph.D. (Electrical Engineering, University of Alberta).
- Originally developed to improve bitumen recovery in Northern Alberta, Dr. McGee develops and patents the Electro-Thermal Dynamic Stripping Process (ET-DSP™).
- ET-DSP™ technology was later evaluated for environmental applications after scientists at UC Berkeley invited Dr. McGee to test the technology at a contaminated site at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).
- The results demonstrated ET-DSP™’s electrical resistive heating technology could effectively mobilize and remove contaminants from soil and groundwater in situ.
Leading the In Situ Thermal Remediation Industry
- Using three-phase electrical power and subsurface electrodes, ET-DSP™ rapidly heats contaminated zones to mobilize and remove a wide range of contaminants more effectively and quickly than any other conventional remediation methods.
- ET-DSP™ technology fundamentally changed the way contaminated soil and groundwater are remediated. Helping pioneer the in situ thermal remediation industry forever.
- ET-DSP™ technology is patented and continuously refined by the in-house R&D team and deployed at contaminated sites across North America and Europe. The technology is used to treat chlorinated solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons, and other complex contaminants, expanding the reach and impact of in situ thermal remediation for soil and groundwater cleanup.
ORIN Remediation Technologies is Founded
- Founded in Verona, Wisconsin, focused on the precise chemistry of environmental remediation.
- Specialized in oxidation, reduction, and bioremediation.
- Early work centered on PFAS, chlorinated solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and other complex contaminants
Mc² Expands with IT-DSP™ | ORIN Launches Wastewater Group
- Mc² introduces the Inductive Thermal Dynamic Stripping Process (IT-DSP™) —a hotter, thermal conductive heating technology that removes emerging and persist contamination stuck in complex geology. , The technology was successfully implemented at one of Sweden’s most infamously contaminated sites.
- ORIN establishes its wastewater treatment group, broadening its environmental service portfolio beyond site remediation
ORIN Re-Brands & BAM™ is Patented
- ORIN Remediation Technologies rebrands as ORIN Technologies LLC to reflect its expanded, multi-discipline capabilities.
- In 2017, ORIN patents BAM™ (Bioavailable Absorbent Media) — a proprietary carbon-based platform derived from recyclable biomass.
- BAM™ acts simultaneously as an absorption medium, a microbial habitat, and a catalyst for contaminant degradation — a peer-tested breakthrough deployed across North America and Europe.
- That same year, ORIN – in partnership with its strategic partner Fixed Earth Innovations - becomes the first organization in the industry to identify and demonstrate microbes capable of degrading PFAS compounds through natural biological processes while coupled with BAM™.

- Combined legacy: 17 patents, 1200+ completed remediation projects globally, thousands of field pilots across six continents.

- Backed by GEF Capital Partners, VIYA launches with the combined expertise and capabilities of both organizations — and a mandate to take on the sites others walk away from and a belief that finding the right path to cleaner ground is always worth the effort.
