Approximately 720 cubic yards of PCE-contaminated unsaturated soil at a former dry cleaning site in northeast Illinois contained free product from 3 to 12 feet below ground surface. TCLP compliance was required to achieve non-hazardous waste classification for disposal at a local landfill.
After removing 3 feet of clean overburden, contaminated soils were treated in-situ within the excavation using simultaneous BAM and chemical oxidation applied and mixed by excavator from 3 to 12 ft below ground surface. Seven QC samples (one per 100 cubic yards) were collected and submitted for laboratory TCLP analysis.
All seven TCLP PCE quality control samples – one collected per 100 cubic yards – returned results below detection limits, confirming non-hazardous waste classification for the full 720 cubic yards of treated soil. Treatment was performed in-situ within the excavation using a combined BAM and chemical oxidation approach applied from 3 to 12 feet below ground surface after removing 3 feet of clean overburden. Non-hazardous classification enabled disposal approval at the local landfill, and all 720 cubic yards of treated PCE-contaminated soil from the former dry cleaning site in northeast Illinois were successfully removed from the site.
