Location
PFAS contamination in shallow groundwater at a former tannery ranged from 2,200 to 6,500 ng/L, background leaf tissue >80 ng/g, in silty sands at 4–12 feet depth, including both long- and short-chain PFAS compounds. The site required a treatment approach capable of addressing the diverse PFAS compound profile within a shallow, biologically sensitive treatment zone.
An integrated pilot system was designed using 8-foot-wide treatment trenches with BAM mixed at 8% soil volume extending into the saturated zone. PFAS-degrading microbes and strategically placed trees for phytoremediation were incorporated. A specialized rhizosphere isolation sleeve protected the biological treatment components and optimized performance in pH 6.5–7 zones.
Regulatory compliance was achieved within one month of system installation at the former tannery site, with BAM treatment trenches extending into the saturated silty sand zone at 4–12 feet depth. The pilot system successfully demonstrated capture of both short-chain and long-chain PFAS compounds—including compounds present across the 2,200 to 6,500 ng/L initial concentration range—validating the combined phytoremediation, BAM, and PFAS-degrading microbial treatment approach. The specialized rhizosphere isolation sleeve protected the biological treatment components and maintained performance in the pH 6.5–7 treatment zone. Background leaf tissue concentrations exceeding 80 ng/g were also addressed as part of the integrated pilot design.
